Highlights 3-31-16

Hello friends and families,

This week has whizzed by! We started learning about habitats in science this week. We discovered that a habitat is the place you live that provides you with food, water, air to breathe, shelter, and protection. We wrote about our own habitats and also drew diagrams, labeling different important aspects of our habitats. These are posted on our bulletin boards outside our room. Check them out!

We also did some good foundational work for our animal research. We brainstormed everything we already know about our animals using the same graphic organizer that we've used when learning about other animals. Then we wrote these ideas in full sentences as notefacts! On Thursday we also began brainstorming the questions we have about our animals. This will help us to focus our research which begins next week!

Second grade mathematicians have been doing more story problem detective work, trying to figure out what information the story is telling us and what the story is asking us. Students read MANY different kinds of story problems and decoded them to figure out if it was the start, the change, or the result that was the missing information. Knowing what type of information is missing helps us to choose the best strategy for solving.First grade mathematicians have been working on composing and decomposing numbers to ten. This work is critical for adding and subtracting all numbers—this skill of composition/decomposition lays the foundation for adding and subtracting with two and three digit numbers in second grade!

I was out sick on Wednesday but our class got rave reviews from Mrs. Joslyn who held down the fort in my absence. Our class really is an amazing and supportive community of learners!

This afternoon and tomorrow I'll get to meet with many of you for conferences. This is when you'll get your child's progress report. If I'm not meeting with you today or tomorrow please check your child's folder for this mail.

Let's hope this warm weather is here to stay! I look forward to seeing many of you soon but I wish you all a fantastic weekend and April Fools Day tomorrow!

Highlights of the Week

Hello families,

By the end of our week we had many students with colds, sore throats, and coughs. Try to get plenty of rest this weekend and stay hydrated to combat whatever is going around our school! Nevertheless, we had a great week together.

On Tuesday we presented our science models to Ben's class. To see plentiful pictures from this event see the post below this one. They did an amazing job learning about the different landforms and bodies of water, depicting them in their models, and telling about them during presentations.

Tuesday afternoon laughter roared from our classroom (I'm told you could even hear us laughing outside!) as we watched our own Mischievous Monkeys circus act. The link to the video is now up on the blog (check it out, it's two posts below this one along with many photos)!

We began to read nonfiction articles about animals this week. We read one all together on Monday about sloths. Then together we filled out a graphic organizer showing what we learned about what sloths: have, can, eat, are, and where they live. On Tuesday partners read articles together and then filled out the same graphic organizer together about the new animal they read about. We'll continue this work in the coming weeks as we begin our unit on animals and their habitats!

On Thursday we reflected on our 128 days in school to think about all we have learned this school year. Students then wrote "two stars and a wish" for themselves, highlighting achievements they are proud of and one more thing they'd like to learn or improve for themselves. I'll share these with you next week at parent/teacher conferences! (If you haven't yet signed up, there are still some open slots. Click on this link, then my name, to see what's still available.)

Our class is loving our new chapter book, Clementine by Sara Pennypacker. Clementine always means well but sometimes gets into trouble without really understanding why. Ask your child how they would describe Clementine.

Please continue to check the weather forecast each day and send your child in with appropriate outdoor clothes and boots as well as clean indoor shoes. Until it's completely dry outside we need boots on the playground!

Landform & Bodies of Water Models

Our first and second grade scientists learned so much about different landforms, bodies of water, and processes that shape the Earth during our latest science unit. Today we presented our models to Ben's class to teach them about what we learned and show how we represented the different land and waterscapes. It was too hard to just choose a few photos, so here are a bunch! When your child brings home his/her model, ask about it!

Wonderle's Big Top Adventures Presents....The Mischievous Monkeys!!!

Here are a few photos I've received from our circus performance last week. Enjoy!

Here are a couple of "cast photos" we took before the circus.

Hooray for technology! Mrs. Joslyn took this video for us during the performance and Mr. Fox helped me upload the video. Here it is for anyone who didn't get to see it or who wants to see it again!

Mr. Hedler also put together a page of links to various videos from Rumney's Circus.
